Women Preachers

A question was asked about the Bible and women preachers and whether I had any sermons or lessons to which he might listen. My reply was as follows:

I am sure that I have preached/taught about women preachers and spiritual leaders before but probably not as the main thought of either a sermon or a lesson. There really is not that much to say on this topic since the New Testament speaks so clearly about it. You are welcome to share the verses you believe create the contradiction and I will try to answer them; but I think I can give you a short answer that would answer most of them.

In the Old Testament, God used both men and women as prophets. Whether that was His plan or there simply were no godly men to stand in to perform the task, I do not know for certain. One of the best examples was Deborah (Judges 4:4). At that time, it seems there were very few men willing to lead the nation of Israel even if they knew what God wanted them to do (Judges 4:8). There were also deaconesses (female servants) in the church (Romans 16:1), but a deacon was never intended to be the spiritual leader of a church. They were and are to be as the word means, "a servant" of the church. While some churches have exalted the office of deacon to that of being a leader in their churches, their doing so does not make it Biblical, just that church's practice.

However, Paul spelled out the fact that God does not intend women to be either preachers or leaders over men in the church.

1 Corinthians 14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

1 Timothy 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

These verses tell us that it is NOT the will of God for women to preach or have authority over men in the church age. I do not know of any New Testament passage that contradicts them. If you have found one, I would be interested in reading it. Instead, most of the people who accept women as preachers typically use Old Testament passages, such as Deborah from Judges. So the question becomes, "Did God EVER want women to be preachers and leaders of men?"

In 1Cor 14:34, Paul stated that the teaching that women are not to be preachers and leaders is also what the Law taught, that is the Old Testament Law. I believe the Law to which he might have been referring was Numbers 30:3-13, where any word that a wife or daughter spoke could be countermanded by her husband or father. While that is not conclusive, it would indicate that God did not intend for the women to be the spokesperson for her home or even HERSELF. If God did not intend for the women to be the spokesperson for the home or herself, it seems much less likely that it was His will for them to be His spokesperson, despite the fact that He did use women for that purpose from time to time. It would also suggest that any woman God did use to be His spokesperson would have been single and of an age that her father had likely passed away.

This, along with passages like 1Cor 11:3-12 and Titus 2:3-5, indicate that it was never God's will for the women to be in these positions, even though God called some to do so. My personal belief is that whenever women lead, it is always a sign that a nation has backslidden and that men have lost their spiritual backbone.

Isaiah 3:12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.

The only other conclusion is that God allowed a few women to lead in the Old Testament until He revealed it was not His will in the New Testament, that being another of the many sinful things that God "winked at" but no longer overlooks (Acts 17:30). Either way, in this age, it is not God's will for women to preach or to lead men.
