I. \\#Isa 9:8-12:6\\ The Word to Judah and Israel
    A. \\#Isa 11:1-9\\ Their Future
        1. \\#Isa 11:1\\ The Final Jewish King Shall Reign
            a. "the stem of Jesse" - Stem means trunk. The blossoming tree
of rulers that God had promised to David was to be cut down due
to their sinfulness, but God is not finished. Out of that
tree trunk, a new stem and Branch shall grow.
            b. The word "Branch" is capitalized and is a common name for Jesus.
                \\#Isa 4:1, Jer 23:5, 33:15, Zech 3:8, 6:12\\
            c. Jesus, the Son of David, will complete the line of rulers that
God had promised to King David.
                \\#2Sam 7:14-16, 1Chron 17:12-14, 22:10, 1Kings 2:4\\
                \\#1Kings 8:25, 9:5, 2Chron 6:16, 7:18, Psalm 89:35-36 \\
            d. How is it that God promised to keep a king of David’s line upon
the throne, but there is not one now and hasn’t been in more
                than 2500 years?
                (1) Both David and Solomon understood that while God would not
replace them, they and their seed still had to be obedient
                     to God.

Psalms 132:12 If thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I
shall teach them, their children shall also sit upon thy throne for evermore.

1 Chronicles 28:7 Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be
constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day.

1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father,
and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD
searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts:
if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will
cast thee off for ever.

                (2) God has kept His word not to replace them, but God did
not promise He would not remove the Jewish throne
altogether. This is what He has done.
                (3) When the Jewish throne is reinstated, a son of David
                     will sit upon it.
        2. \\#Isa 11:2\\ The Source of the King’s Power
            a. "the spirit of the Lord" - The Holy Ghost shall rest upon Him.
            b. The Holy Spirit shall empower Him with…
                (1) "the spirit of wisdom"
                (2) the spirit of "understanding"
                (3) "the spirit of counsel and might"
                (4) "the spirit of knowledge"
                (5) "the fear of the Lord"
        3. \\#Isa 11:3-5\\ The Nature of the King
            a. \\#Isa 11:3\\ "And shall make him of quick understanding"
                (1) This whole phrase is derived from one Hebrew word.
                (2) The word is translated SMELL 8x, TOUCH 1x, and ACCEPT 1x.
                (3) Primarily, it has to do with a person’s senses.
                (4) The idea seems to be that even the PEECEPTION of the
Messiah will different. He will perceive as the fearful
                     God Almighty.
                (5) If Jesus perceived the secrets of men in His incarnation,
how much more glorious will be His understanding when He
                     comes again? \\#Matt 16:8, 22:18, Mark 2:8, Luke 9:47\\
            b. "he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes" - He will not
use mere eyesight to determine right and wrong.
            c. "neither reprove after the hearing of his ears" - Neither what
                He hears.
            d. \\#Isa 11:4\\ But His shall be…
                (1) "righteousness" - a righteous judgment…
                (2) "equity" - an equitable reproving…
                (3) …and a powerful execution ("he shall smite the earth with
the rod of his mouth and with the breath of his lips"
            e. \\#Isa 11:5\\ And He shall be clothed in RIGHTEOUSNESS and
                FAITHFULNESS.
        4. \\#Isa 11:6-9\\ The Nature of the Kingdom - one of great peace
            a. God will re-design the very nature of the world to be at peace.
b All predators shall abide at peace with their previous quarry.
                (1) \\#Isa 11:6\\ "the wolf… with the lamb"
                (2) "the leopard… with the kid"
                (3) "the calf and the young lion"
                (4) \\#Isa 11:7\\ "the cow and the bear"
            c. Instead of meat, they "shall eat straw like the ox."
            d. \\#Isa 11:8\\ Their whole nature shall be so changed that they will
                 neither "hurt nor destroy."
            e. So much so that even the innocent child need have no fear…
                (1) \\#Isa 11:6\\ "…a little child shall lead them."
                (2) \\#Isa 11:8\\ "…the sucking child shall play on the hole of
                     the asp…"
                (3) \\#Isa 11:8\\ "…the weaned child shall put his hand on the
                     cockatrice’ den."
                (4) Both the asp and the cockatrice are references to poisonous
                     snakes.
            f. \\#Isa 11:9\\ And "the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the
                Lord."

    B. \\#Isa 11:10-16\\ Their Regathering
        1. \\#Isa 11:10\\ "And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse"
\\#Isa 11:1\\ speaks of the BRANCH growing out of the trunk while
\\#Isa 11:10\\ speaks of a ROOT growing out of it.
            a. A BRANCH speaks of the future - Jesus is the future of Israel
                and the world.
            b. A ROOT speaks of the past. There would have been no tree if there
were no roots in the past. God is speaking of fixing what sin
has done to His creation. He will repair the very foundations
                of creation itself.
            c. The future and past all hinge upon the same Person.
                (1) Both the BRANCH and the ROOT come out of Jesse.
                (2) Jesus is both the BRANCH and the ROOT.
                (3) Jesus is the cure for Israel’s past and future.
        2. \\#Isa 11:10\\ "ensign of the people" - An ENSIGN is a flag or banner.
Jesus will not only aid Israel but all GENTILES. This prophecy is
being fulfilled in one measure now through the church but shall be
fulfilled in greater measure when all the world comes to worship
            Messiah.
        3. \\#Isa 11:11-12\\ "…the Lord shall set his hand again the second time
to recover the remnant of his people…."
            a. \\#Isa 11:11\\ "second time" - There will only be two
                regatherings of Israel.
                (1) The first was when God regathered them out of Babylon.
                (2) The second is an end time gathering followed by safety and
                     worshipping Jehovah. \\#Eze 11:16-19, 36:24-28,\\
                     \\#Jer 50:19-20, Isa 14:1-3,54:7-8\\
                (3) There also remains at least one end time scattering of Israel.
This will come as the anti-Christ persecutes the Jews.
                     \\#Matt 24:15-21\\.
                (3) This regathering will take place at the end of the tribulation
and the beginning of the millennial.
                (4) \\#Isa 11:12\\ At that time, God shall gather "the dispersed
of Judah from the four corners of the earth."
            b. The re-making of the nation of Israel in 1948 MAY HAVE BEEN THE
BEGINNING of this prophecy, but it is not the ultimate
fulfillment of Israel being regathered. While God’s people have
been coming back to the land of Israel from all these nations
and many others, the remainder of this prophecies HAS NOT BEEN
                FULFILLED.
            c. Not only must there at least one more scattering, there could be
several more! We do not know what may happen between now and the
time the anti-Christ steps onto the scene.
        4. \\#Isa 11:13\\ "Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex
Ephraim." - There will be peace between Judah and Israel. This is a
            repeated prophecy of the millennium.
            \\#Jeremiah 3:18, Eze 37:15-17, 22, Hosea 1:10-11\\
        5. \\#Isa 11:14\\ "But they shall fly upon… the Philistines… Edom and
            Moab… Ammon"
            a. Here is another verse which prophesies Israel having an army and
defeating its enemies with a glorious defeat.
                \\#Isa 9:4-5, Obadiah 1:17-18, Zech 14:13-15\\
            b. "Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon" - While we think of
these nations as being extinct, it is quite likely that the
remnants of these ancient people still abide in the boundaries of
                these lands.
        6. \\#Isa 11:15-16\\ Continuing the thought of regathering the Jews from
the many places they have been scattered, Isaiah draws upon the
deliverance of Israel out of Egypt (past) and from Babylon (future).
            a. \\#Isa 11:15\\ "utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea"
As God dried up the Red Sea with His MIGHTY WIND, so God will
SMITE another body of water, making it possible for those who
fled to return on dry ground (DRYSHOD).
                (1) TONGUE - The word does not have to be a literal tongue but
                    something tongue shaped.
                       i. The word, although literally translated as the tongue
muscle 98 times in the Bible, is translated a BAY 3x.
ii. In the context of a large body of water, the word
likely refers to a tongue-shaped bay here as well.
iii. A possible meaning then might be that God will DESTROY
a tongue-shaped bay that comes off of the EGYPTIAN SEA
so that the Jews can return on dry ground.
                (2) "Egyptian Sea" - We are not certain what body of water is
referred to; but by referencing the exodus of Israel from
Egypt, it is likely speaking of the Red Sea. If so, this
would open a route for the Jews to return who fled to the
                     south.
            b. "shall he shake his hand over the river"- God will also bring the
exiled Jews from across THE RIVER, thought by many to be the
Euphrates River. This would open a route for the scattered Jews
to return from the north. (See \\#Isa 44:27\\)
                (1) This is an end time prophecy.
                (2) Even so, in approximately 150 years, the Jews will be carried
away into Babylon. 70 years later, they will return. If THE
RIVER is a reference to the Euphrates, remembering the first
regathering from that part of the world will serve as a
powerful illustration to Israel of God’s end-time
                     regathering power.
                (3) The name of the river is not given in the text (although
the NIV and other COMMENTARIES include it.)
                (4) "shall smite it in the seven streams" - Albert Barnes in
his commentary says that the Euphrates River will be
subdivided into seven streams of such smaller consequence
that men shall go over with their feet left dry. (He then
gives the illustration of Cyrus doing something similar
to the River Gyndes in his march to Babylon, although it
took him the whole of the summer and the employment of a
great number of people. (Albert Barnes, Isaiah 11:15)
            c. \\#Isa 11:16\\ "there shall be a highway for the remnant of his
people" - The end result will be a HIGHWAY for the returning
people which will run from Assyria to Israel to Egypt.
                \\#Isa 19:23-25, 27:13, 35:8-10, Zech 10:10\\
